Paulo Menezes 

Paulo Menezes has a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a specialization in Informatics since 2007. He is with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Coimbra and is responsible for the courses on Computer Architecture, Computer Graphics and Augmented Reality, and Interactive Systems and Robotics. He is also a senior researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics, and the head of the Immersive Systems and Sensorial Stimulation Laboratory that develops activities and advises 6 PhD students in areas such as Machine Learning, Affective Computing, Human-Robot Interaction, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and Human Behaviour Analysis. He is currently involved in several national projects in the areas of telemedicine, Augmented Reality for Manufacture, Intelligent Assistive Environments, Brain-Computer Interfaces for Safe Industrial Robotics, Cognitive Stimulation Games for Autistic Children, and Serious Games for Emotional Learning in Children in Public Schools. At the European level he has been involved in several projects, currently is responsible for the Robotic Social Interaction WP on the H2020 RISE Lifebots Exchange project. He is a member and the vice-president of the Portuguese Chapter of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, and a Member of the IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics Society.

PhD Students

 

 

Bruno Ferreira

Bruno Ferreira was born on the 14th of September, 1996, in Coimbra, Portugal. He completed his Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2019. Since then he has been an active researcher and a PhD student with IS3L at the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR), Coimbra.

His main research interests include immersive technologies for motor rehabilitation, estimation of body pose, analysis of human motion, interpretation of the emotional state, as well as recognition and anticipation of human actions. Since September 2020, his research has been selected for funding by "Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia" (FCT) under the aegis of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) of the Government of Portugal.

Bruno Patrão

Bruno Patrão received the M.Sc. in Visual Information Technologies from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Coimbra in 2011. The field of his M.Sc. dissertation was in Computer Vision, entitled "Augmented Reality System based on Binary Patterns".

His interests include Augmented/Virtual Reality, Interactive Systems and Computer Graphics.

Gustavo Assunção

Gustavo Assunção received his M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2019. Since then he has been a researcher with IS3L at the Institute of Systems and Robotics, Coimbra, Portugal, and is currently pursuing a PhD with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Coimbra, Portugal. As of 2020, his research has been selected for funding by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the aegis of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) of the Government of Portugal. His research interests encompass deep learning, computational neuroscience, neurocognitive computing, and a bio-inspired mathematical foundation for artificial intelligence, to which he has been contributing since 2019.

Luis Agnelo de Almeida

Luis Agnelo de Almeida is currently a PhD student at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. He has an Electrical Engineering degree (specialization in computers) from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra (FCTUC).
Main scientific interests are Computer Vision, Robotics, Augmented Reality, and Computer Graphics.

Maria Rita Nogueira

Maria Rita graduated and obtained her M.Sc in Design and Multimedia, from the Department of Informatics Engineering, University of Coimbra. Since then she has been developed knowledge in the digital environment that allowed her to think about their integration in different areas. Her research interests focus on user experience, interface, human-computer interaction, and its application to multidisciplinary works, such as Arts, Design, Health. She is currently attending the Doctoral Program in Contemporary Arts at the University of Coimbra. In this context, her research has been selected for funding by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the aegis of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) of the Government of Portugal. Previously, Maria Rita researched at the Center for Research in Territory, Architecture, and Design from Lisbon (CITAD), where she integrated the User Experience Design (UxD) Lab.

Rui Silva
 
Rui Silva received his M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 2020.  He is currently a researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics and is part of the Immersive Systems and Sensory Stimulation Laboratory team (IS3L). 
His main research interests are spatial augmented reality and new technologies for cognitive rehabilitation and quality of life improvement. He is currently involved in a project that promotes the development of social-emotional competencies in children through the use of serious games.

 

MSc Students

 

Emanuel Pereira

Emanuel Pereira is an M. Sc. student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Coimbra. He is currently developing his master dissertation at the Immersive Systems and Sensory Stimulation (IS3L) of the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR). Due to his programming interest and focus on helping people, his research is directed to Virtual Reality serious games applied to vestibular and post-stroke rehabilitation to help in a faster recovery with some fun.

 

Joana Valvez Teixeira

Joana Valvez is a student in the Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Coimbra. Additionally, she is developing her master dissertation within the IS3L / ISR in a project involving virtual reality and psychology.
Her interests are focused on serious games, and she is quite enthusiastic about programming.

 

João Pedro Simões

As someone enthusiastic about technology and engineering, it is natural to pass the passion of work and interests to others. As well as try to keep updated by searching for news about technology, largely online.
The willingness to find new technology throughout the years lead to try multiple personal projects in vast areas such as game development, new computer programming languages, development on Android, web design, data science, to name a few.
While in studies, areas such as parallel computation, computer vision, and algorithm optimization surged as areas of high interest.

 

Ricardo Matias

Ricardo Matias is an Electrical and Computer Engineering master's student at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. He is also collaborating with the ISR in research involving virtual reality and the Digital Twin of a real robot. His main interest is programming, especially using C++.

Rémi Delauzun

Rémi Delauzun is a french student in a master of Robotic and Interactive Systems at the University Paul Sabatier, in the engineering school UPSSITECH. As part of the training, he does an internship in the ISR laboratory. The goal for him is to further develop an existing framework of an interactive avatar to act as a personal trainer, with a focus on elderly people.
